If you're a cat owner, you've likely cleaned up your share of vomit. Well, you're not alone because at Morgan Pet Clinic in Omaha, we've cleaned up quite a bit too. In fact, vomiting is one of the most common cat illnesses we treat. We're often asked by clients what is making their cat throw up. Honestly, there's a vast array of reasons why your kitty is vomiting, and it often takes a combination of investigation, questioning, and testing to pinpoint the exact cause.

Causes of Vomiting in Cats

- Diet: something they ate was bad or caused an allergic reaction.

- Poisons/Toxins: many household and environmental items can poison your pet, including antifreeze, medications, garlic, and various types of flowers.

- Gastrointestinal issues: ulcers, inflamed stomach lining, and blockages can cause vomiting.

- Organ Disease: kidney, liver, and pancreatic disease will cause frequent vomiting in cats.

- Infection: peritonitis, feline panleukopenia, and Heartworm.

- Cancer: a variety of cancers have vomiting as a symptom.

- Endocrine disorders: diseases like diabetes and overactive thyroid can cause vomiting.

- Neurologic issues: encephalitis, inner ear imbalance, and brain lesions.

Diagnosis and Treatment

When you bring your cat to our pet hospital for vomiting, our team will conduct a thorough evaluation that includes a physical exam, blood work, and asking you several questions in order to pinpoint the cause of the vomiting. Be prepared to discuss things like diet, water intake, the color and consistency of the vomit, and the frequency. Once a cause is determined, your cat will be given any number of treatments that could include dietary changes, fluids, anti-vomit medication, or anti-inflammatory medication.
